Membrane and battens first
Before a single tile went on, the slope was covered in new blue breathable membrane with fresh battens fixed across it, set out evenly from the gutter line to the ridge.
Getting this layer right is what keeps a tiled roof dry for the long term: the membrane is the second line of defence under the tiles, and the battens decide how straight the finished courses run.
Four roofers, tiles stacked across the whole slope
The crew carried the brown concrete interlocking tiles up and stacked them in small piles along the battens, so the weight is spread across the roof and every course has its tiles to hand.
