Sagging runs come down, the fascia behind gets checked, and we refix the gutter on new brackets set to a steady fall towards the outlet. Downpipes get new clips and their joints pushed home. Gutter repairs questions
Can a leaking gutter just be repaired?
Yes, if the gutter is sound and the leak is at a joint, bracket or outlet. A new seal or union costs a fraction of a new run and stops the water staining the wall and rotting the fascia. If the uPVC is brittle or the joints fail all along the run, replacing it is the better spend, and we will tell you so.
Why is my gutter leaking at the joints?
The rubber seals inside each union perish with age, sunlight and temperature swings, and once they harden they stop gripping the gutter. Silt sitting in the joint makes it worse by holding water against the seal. Movement from a sagging run pulls joints apart too. We clean the joint, fit a new seal or union and check the fall.
How do you fix a sagging gutter?
We take the sagging section down, check the fascia board behind for rot, and refix the gutter on new brackets set closer together and to the correct fall. If the fascia is soft, the brackets have nothing to grip, so we replace that board first. Then we run water through to prove it drains towards the outlet.
Can a cracked plastic gutter be sealed?
A small crack can be sealed as a short-term fix, but uPVC that has cracked once is brittle and will crack again nearby. We cut out the damaged length and fit a new section with proper unions, which gives a watertight joint that moves with the weather. It costs little more than a patch and lasts far longer.
Is old cast iron guttering worth saving?
Yes, while the metal is still sound. We clean out the rust and old sealant, reseal the joints and refix any loose brackets so the run holds its fall. If the cast iron has rusted through or cracked, we replace that run with uPVC in a matching profile, which looks close to the original from the street.
