Signs it is time for new guttering
Replacement beats repair once the gutter itself has worn out.
Brittle, faded uPVC
Old uPVC fades, chalks and turns brittle in the sun. Once it cracks at a touch, every repair just moves the leak further along the run.
Leaks at every joint
When every union drips, the seals across the whole run have perished. Replacing them one at a time ends up costing more than a new system.
Rusted cast iron
Cast iron rusted through at the joints or at the foot of the downpipes is past sealing, and a falling length of it is heavy.
Gutters too small for the roof
Overflow in every heavy shower, even when the gutter is clean, means it is undersized or short of outlets. A bigger profile solves it.
A patchwork roofline
Years of patches in different colours and profiles leave a roofline that leaks at every change of section. One new system puts it right.

String line, close brackets, straight pipes
We take down the old gutters and downpipes, check every fascia board for soft spots and replace any that will not hold a screw. Then we set the line: a string from the high point to the outlet so every run falls steadily towards its downpipe, with no dips to hold water. Brackets go on at close centres so the gutter stays straight under a full load of rain.
The uPVC goes up in the profile you picked, with unions, stop ends, angles and outlets clipped firmly home. Downpipes run straight and plumb, fixed to the wall with pipe clips and finished into the existing drain or a shoe. We run a hose along every length to check the flow, then load up every scrap of the old system and sweep the ground below.
- Old gutters and downpipes removed
- Fascias checked before fixing
- String line for a steady fall
- Brackets at close centres
- Downpipes plumb into the drain
- Flow tested with a hose

New guttering to suit Sussex houses
The right profile follows the house. Brighton's Victorian and Edwardian homes look right in half round or ogee, the classic shapes that took over from their original cast iron. Square suits the 1960s and 70s houses on the estates around the city and newer homes out towards Worthing and Burgess Hill. On exposed seafront streets we pay extra attention to bracket spacing, because wind-driven rain loads gutters hard and gales test every fixing.
Half round, square or ogee?
All three come in uPVC with matching downpipes, and the shape is about looks and how much water it carries.
Half round
The classic curved gutter found on most British houses. It drains well, is easy to keep clean and suits almost any home, from a Victorian terrace to a 1950s bungalow.
Best for: Most houses and period homes
Square
A flat-bottomed, angular profile with a clean, modern line. It suits post-war and modern houses, and it pairs with square downpipes for a crisp, sharp finish at every corner of the house.
Best for: Modern and post-war houses
Ogee
A decorative profile with a flat back and a moulded front, based on traditional cast iron. It carries more water than standard half round and looks right on period properties.
Best for: Period homes and heavy runoff

The cost of a new gutter system
New guttering is priced by the metre, but access and the number of fittings move the total most. A semi with one front run and a single downpipe is simple; a Victorian house with bay windows, returns and a rear addition needs more corners, more outlets and more setting up. Profile and colour make a smaller difference. We price it all after a free look and fix the figure.
What sets the price
- Total length of gutter
- Number of downpipes and outlets
- Corners, bays and stop ends
- Building height and access
- Profile and colour
- Fascia boards needing replacement
No surprises: the price on your written quote is the price you pay. No deposit.

Gutter replacement questions
Which gutter profile should I choose?
Half round for most houses, ogee for period homes that want a traditional look or need extra capacity, and square for modern and post-war houses. All three come in uPVC with matching downpipes and fittings. Look at what suits the style of your street, and if you are torn between two, we will recommend one when we quote.
Do new gutters come with new downpipes?
Yes, we replace the downpipes along with the gutters as standard, so the profile and colour match and every joint is new. Old downpipes with perished joints or rusted clips undo the benefit of a new gutter. When your downpipes are sound and already match, we keep them and take the cost off your quote.
What colours does uPVC guttering come in?
White, black, brown and anthracite grey are the main colours, so you can match the gutter to your windows or fascias. Black suits period houses where cast iron used to hang, while white and anthracite suit modern homes. The colour runs right through the uPVC, so it never needs painting.
Will new guttering fit my old fascia boards?
It fits any sound fascia. The brackets screw into the fascia board, so if it is rotten or split, the new gutter will sag within a season. We check every board when the old gutter comes down and tell you if any need replacing, with the price, before fixing anything to them.
Do you take the old guttering away?
Yes. Every length of old gutter, downpipe and bracket, cast iron included, leaves site with us. You will not find offcuts in the flower beds or old pipe in your wheelie bin, and we sweep up before we go. Waste removal is part of the price you are quoted, never an extra.
