Signs to look for

When it's a roofing emergency

If any of these is happening right now, don't wait for the morning.

Water pouring through a ceiling

A bulging or dripping ceiling holds a lot of water. Switch off the lights in that room, put a bucket under it and ring us straight away.

Tiles torn off in a storm

A gale that strips a run of tiles or slates leaves the felt open to the next band of rain. It needs sheeting over before that arrives.

Chimney pot or stack damage

A cracked pot, a leaning stack or bricks landing in the garden put anyone underneath in danger. Keep people well clear and call us.

Flat roof split open

A split in the felt or a lifted edge on an extension roof lets water straight into the room below. We seal it temporarily on the same visit.

Lead ripped off by wind

A gale can peel a flashing or valley lead right back. Water then runs down behind the chimney or into the wall, and it gets worse with every shower.

A branch through the roof

A fallen branch opens the roof to rain and weakens the timbers around it. We make it safe, sheet it over and photograph everything for your insurer.

How we do it

What happens when you call

Ring us any hour of the day or night. Tell us where the water is coming in and what you can see, and we get a roofer on the way to you. The first job on site is to stop the water. We sheet the damaged area with heavy tarpaulin, batten it down so the wind can't get under it, and seal any open flashings or splits with temporary weatherproofing. Your house is dry and safe before we go.

Once the rain has stopped and the roof is safe to work on, we come back for the permanent fix. That means new slates or tiles, rebuilt ridges, fresh lead or a new section of flat roof, whatever the storm damaged. We photograph the damage and the temporary repair so your insurer has what it needs. You pay no call-out charge, and the permanent repair carries the same full guarantee as everything else we do.

In Brighton and Sussex

Storm damage on the Sussex coast

The worst roof emergencies in Brighton arrive on a south-westerly. Gales come straight off the Channel, hit the seafront terraces first and funnel up the valleys between the hills. Slates on Regency roofs held by tired nails lift in sequence, chimney pots crack, and parapet gutters overflow into top-floor rooms. Inland, towns like Crawley and Horsham see more damage from falling trees. We cover all of East and West Sussex around the clock, because storms don't wait for a weekday.

JJohnApril 2025 · Guttering

I had an excellent experience with Sure Seal Roofing & Gutter Ltd from start to finish. Their team was professional, reliable, and incredibly efficient. Communication was clear throughout the entire process, and they took the time to explain everything in detail, which I really appreciated. The quality of the work exceeded my expectations they were meticulous, fast, and left everything spotless when the job was done. It’s clear they take a lot of pride in what they do, and it shows in the results. I’m very happy with the outcome and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for trustworthy and skilled roofing professionals. Thank you again for such a great experience

I had an issue with my roof. There was a slight leak. It turned out to be a major issue. I called multiple companies they were asking for substantial amount of money. Some of them even mention that I have to replace the whole roof but this company has turned up and sorted out with a very minor issues and Very cost efficient. I highly recommend them

NNatalieFebruary 2026 · Flat roof

We had an issue with a leak coming from our chimney and on getting up there realised our flat roof had been installed poorly. Brendan was so professional throughout, talking us through everything and not pressuring us to make quick decisions regarding the repair. His team were very efficient and got the job done in 2 days. Brendan kept me updated throughout the job, sending photos of the work. His team left the place spotless, even washing down the roof on completion. Having had a few quotes from some rather suspect companies, these guys are so genuine and clearly take pride in doing the job well. Would recommend and call again if needed.

Straight answers

Emergency roof repairs questions

What counts as a roofing emergency?

Anything that lets water into the house or puts people at risk. Water coming through a ceiling, tiles or slates stripped by a storm, a chimney stack that's cracked or leaning, a flat roof that's split, or a tree through the roof are all emergencies. A single slipped slate in dry weather can wait for a normal repair appointment.

What should I do until the roofer arrives?

Keep everyone safe first. Switch off the lights and sockets in the room with the leak, move furniture and electricals out of the way and catch the water in buckets. If the ceiling is bulging, keep people out from under it. Don't climb onto the roof or up a ladder in the wind, and take photos for your insurer.

Is storm damage to a roof covered by home insurance?

Sudden storm damage, such as tiles torn off in a gale, is covered by most buildings policies, while gradual wear and tear is not, so check your own policy wording. What insurers want is evidence. We photograph the damage before and after the temporary repair and give you a written quote for the permanent fix to send straight in.

Can a roof be repaired properly in the rain?

Not permanently. Mortar won't cure, torch-on felt and GRP won't bond to a wet surface, and nobody should be fixing slates on a slippery roof in a gale. In the rain, we make the roof watertight with tarpaulin and temporary seals. The permanent repair follows as soon as the weather lets us do it right.

Do you take the tarpaulin away afterwards?

Yes. When we come back for the permanent repair, the tarpaulin, battens and any temporary seals come off and leave with us, along with the broken slates and old timber. You won't be left with a blue sheet flapping on the roof for months, and your garden gets cleared of storm debris too.

Water coming in right now? Call us.
