Rain spilling over the front edge of the gutter instead of running to the downpipe means the outlet or the run itself is blocked.
Moss and weeds on show

A downpipe that stays dry in heavy rain, or gurgles and backs up, has a blockage somewhere between the outlet and the drain.

We clear every run by hand, bagging leaves, moss, silt and old nesting material as we go rather than tipping it onto your path or lawn. Outlets get cleared right down into the downpipe, and we flush each pipe with water to prove it runs freely to the drain. If a downpipe is blocked further down, we open it up and clear it from below.
While we are up there, we look at the joints, brackets and fall on every run and tell you about anything that needs attention, such as a leaking union or a loose bracket. Small fixes can be done on the same visit if you want them. We finish by sweeping up underneath, so the only sign we were there is gutters that work.

Why Brighton gutters block so quickly

Gutter cleaning questions
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Once a year for most homes, ideally in late autumn after the leaves have dropped. Houses under big trees or near the parks need a second clean in spring. In Brighton and along the coast, a clean after the gull nesting season clears out twigs and debris before the autumn rain arrives, which saves you an overflow in the first big storm.
Can blocked gutters cause damp inside the house?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes of damp on upper walls. Water overflowing a blocked gutter pours down the same stretch of brickwork every time it rains, soaks through to the inside face and shows as damp patches, mould or bubbling paint. Clearing the gutter stops the soaking, and the wall then dries out.
Do you clear the downpipes as well?
Yes, every clean includes the downpipes. We clear the outlet at the top, flush each pipe with water and check it runs freely into the drain. A gutter is only as good as its downpipe, and a pipe blocked halfway down backs water straight up into a freshly cleaned gutter, putting you back where you started.
Can you clear gull nests from my gutters?
Yes, once the nest is no longer in use. Gulls nest on Brighton roofs from spring into summer, and active nests should be left alone until the chicks have fledged. After that we clear the old nest, the twigs and the mess from gutters, valleys and outlets, and check nothing underneath has been damaged.
Do you check the roof while cleaning the gutters?
Yes. From the gutter line we can see the lower courses of tiles or slates, the valleys and any lead within reach, and we tell you about slipped tiles, lifted lead or heavy moss. For a view of the whole roof, ask for a free drone survey at the same time. It costs you nothing and gives you close-up photos of every slope.
What happens to the waste from my gutters?
It goes into bags and leaves with us. We never tip gutter sludge onto your flower beds, lawn or path, and we sweep up underneath before we go. One customer, Klemz, said on Google that we "made our garden cleaner than it was before they came", and that is the standard we work to on every clean.
