Why is there a damp patch on the chimney breast in my Shoreham semi?
Water is getting into the stack from above. On rendered 1930s chimneys, cracked render, failed flaunching round the pots or lifted lead flashing lets rain soak into the brickwork, and it shows up as a stain on the chimney breast inside. An open pot with no cap adds to it. We repair the render, rebed the pots, fit caps and reflash.
How do you stop moss coming back on a riverside roof in Old Shoreham?
You cannot stop it for good by the river, but you can slow it right down. We scrape the moss off by hand, clean the tiles, apply a biocide wash that keeps working after we leave, and clear the gutters and downpipes. Cutting back overhanging branches helps too, and we point out any that are feeding the problem.
