Eastbourne's roofs, from the Meads to the marina
Eastbourne was laid out as a planned Victorian resort, and the Meads shows it: tall villas with steep slate and clay tile roofs, gabled dormers, lead-lined valleys and chimney stacks standing high above the ridge. Those roofs are big, complex and hard to see from the ground, which is why small faults go unnoticed for years. Up in the Old Town around St Mary's Church, older brick and flint cottages sit under handmade clay tiles with crooked ridgelines and soft mortar that has weathered out of the joints.
Closer to the water, the seafront hotels and town-centre terraces catch Channel weather head on, and salt works on every lead joint and fixing. Head east and the stock changes again. Hampden Park and Langney bring interwar, post-war and later estates with concrete tiles and flat-roofed extensions, while the newer homes around Sovereign Harbour carry dry ridge and verge systems exposed to wind across open water. We send the drone up first, so you see the valley or dormer at fault rather than taking our word for it.

Where Eastbourne roofs let the water in
Size, age and sea air decide where an Eastbourne roof fails first.
Split lead in villa valleys
Big Victorian roofs drain through long lead valleys between the gables. Old lead thins, cracks at the joints and lets water run into the rafters well before anything shows on a ceiling.
Tall stacks in the wind
High chimneys on Meads villas take a beating, so pointing erodes, flaunching cracks and pots work loose. We repoint, rebed and reflash, or take a redundant stack down below the roofline.
Weathered dormer cheeks
Dormer cheeks and tops, clad in lead, tile or timber, open up at the joints in driving rain. We strip them back, replace rotten timber and reclad so the dormer sheds water again.
Felt extensions in Langney and Hampden Park
Rear extensions and garages finished in felt reach the end of their life and start to pond. Our fix is a new GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber covering on a properly falling deck.

We had an issue with a leak coming from our chimney and on getting up there realised our flat roof had been installed poorly. Brendan was so professional throughout, talking us through everything and not pressuring us to make quick decisions regarding the repair. His team were very efficient and got the job done in 2 days. Brendan kept me updated throughout the job, sending photos of the work. His team left the place spotless, even washing down the roof on completion. Having had a few quotes from some rather suspect companies, these guys are so genuine and clearly take pride in doing the job well. Would recommend and call again if needed.
If you have any roofing work or repairs to be done, then look no further than Sureseal Roofing & Guttering. I have found William and his team to be responsive & professional. They were able to address all my queries and advise wherever necessary. Most importantly their standard of finished work measured upto what had been committed, as well as my expectations of high quality. I whole-heartedly recommend their work.
The owner and his team provided a great quotation, fair pricing, and excellent communication. I recently had my garage roof repaired and was very satisfied. The work was completed efficiently and to a high standard. Highly recommended!

Roofing questions from Eastbourne
Why is my Meads villa leaking when the slates look fine from the street?
Because the trouble is on the parts you cannot see. On tall Victorian roofs, leaks start in the valleys, behind chimney stacks, at dormer cheeks and in hidden gutters, not on the visible slopes. We check every valley and flashing, point to the exact failure and fix that, rather than replacing slates that were never the problem.
Can you match handmade clay tiles on an Old Town cottage in Eastbourne?
We can, by salvaging every sound tile from the roof and sourcing reclaimed or new handmade tiles in a colour and size that sit happily with the old ones. Ring the council before any change if the cottage is listed or in a conservation area. The finished repair should be hard to spot from the street, and that is how we judge it.
Does Sovereign Harbour's exposure cause problems for newer roofs?
It does test them. Homes around the harbour face wind straight off open water, and the plastic dry verge caps and ridge clips on modern roofs are the first things to crack or unclip. We replace broken caps, check every ridge fixing and inspect the flashings where roofs meet walls, since salt eats at cheap metal trims there.
How do you check a tall Eastbourne roof without scaffolding?
We fly a drone over it. The free drone survey photographs slopes, valleys, stacks and flashings on even the tallest Meads villa, and you look at the pictures with us. Scaffolding goes up only when the work itself needs it, it is priced into your quote from the start, and there is no deposit to pay.
